What We Look For During a Paint Inspection
One of the things that surprises people the most when they visit us at Spotless Detailing is just how much time we spend inspecting a car before we actually start working on it. To some, it might look like we’re just staring at paintwork under weird lights, but trust us, there’s a reason behind it.
Before we even think about picking up a machine polisher or applying a ceramic coating, we take a deep dive into the condition of your vehicle’s paint. This initial inspection is absolutely crucial to getting the best results, and it’s where the magic really begins.
Seeing What the Naked Eye Can’t
Under normal lighting, most paintwork looks... well, fine. But when we bring the car inside and get it under our inspection lights, it’s a whole different story. We’re looking for swirl marks, micro-scratches, dullness, hazing from previous machine polishing gone wrong, and deeper scratches that might need special attention. This tells us how much work the paint actually needs, and helps us tailor our approach for your car specifically.
Not All Paint Is Created Equal
Different manufacturers use different types of paint, and they don’t all behave the same way. Some paints, like those on many German cars, are super hard and take a bit more work to refine. Others, like on Japanese cars, can be really soft, so they swirl more easily and need a gentler touch.
Knowing this helps us avoid doing too much or too little. It also ensures we get the best finish possible without compromising the integrity of your paintwork.
Picking Up on a Car’s History
We’re not just looking at swirls and scratches, we’re also spotting signs of previous bodywork repairs. Maybe a panel’s been resprayed, there's overspray on the trim, or the colour match is off. These are the kind of details that tell us your car’s story, even if you’ve just bought it.
Sometimes it’s subtle, sometimes it’s not - but we always flag anything we find and explain how it might affect what we can do.
Beyond the Paint
Of course, we’re not only looking at the bodywork. We’ll check for damage or contamination on your wheels, faded plastics or rubber trims, dull headlights, and even water marks etched into the glass. These things all affect the final look of the car, and by spotting them early, we can recommend ways to restore and protect every part of your vehicle.
Is the Paint Clean?
You’d be surprised how many vehicles still have bonded contaminants on the surface, even after a good wash. We’ll often clay bar a small test section after the wash stage to check for tar spots, iron fallout, or tree sap. These things can’t be polished away. They have to be removed beforehand, or they’ll interfere with the finish and durability of any protection we apply.
Why We Do It This Way
All of this inspection work means we’re never guessing. We don’t offer “one size fits all” packages, because every car is different. By thoroughly inspecting the paint, we can build a bespoke plan that’s right for your vehicle, your expectations, and how you use it.
It also means we can have a proper conversation with you, not just about what you’d like to improve, but also about what’s realistic and what’s worth protecting long term.
When you drop your car off and catch us inspecting it under different lights in great detail, rest assured, it's not overkill. It's a crucial part of the process that allows us to tailor our approach and deliver the best possible finish.
